Achilles Tendonitis in Runners

Have you recently been out for your regular jog only to be stopped by a sharp pain on the back of your foot near your tendon? If this problem is interfering with your life, visit the team at Potomac Podiatry Group for help. When you have Achilles tendonitis in Sterling, Chantilly, or Woodbridge, VA, or White Plains, Crofton, or Annapolis, MD, you have reliable and expert podiatry care to assist you.

What Is Achilles Tendonitis?

It is intense inflammation of the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon connects your heel bone to your lower calf. Therefore, whenever you walk, run, or jump, you are constantly activating this part of your body.

Who Is Often Affected by this Disorder?

Anyone can develop this condition, but it is prevalent in runners and athletes. Running can put a lot of stress on that tendon, and it can become inflamed. Thanks to how the foot and calf move when you run, this tendon is in constant activation mode if you run several miles a day. When the inflammation becomes too much, it can affect running or general mobility.

How Can a Local Podiatrist Help?

There is hope for Achilles tendonitis in Sterling, Chantilly, and Woodbridge, VA, and White Plains, Crofton, and Annapolis, MD. As in any other foot or lower leg issue, the podiatrist will review the tendon under an X-ray or CT scan. You should describe the pain and how often it occurs. From there, the podiatrist will consider the best technique for your situation.

Treatment may start with cortisone injections to the area and the recommendation that you reduce or stop running for a period. Your foot specialist may have you wear a night splint to immobilize the tendon when you sleep. They may also prescribe heel lifts or other orthopedic devices to reduce the pressure on that tendon when you walk. The team can also show you various stretching techniques that help to ease the pain and start rebuilding the tendon’s strength. If the condition gets to the point where it ruptures or frays, surgery may be required.
